Blockparty 2010 preliminary results and news

Another successful edition of Blockparty, thanks to another successful edition of Notacon, took place last weekend. We have a partial list of attendees.Official results, and links to various photos, videos, and reports, will be up soon. Here are some preliminary, very unofficial results:

Demo
1. Size Doesn’t Matter by Coda (7kb intro)
2. Sweet PEG Hoe by Northern Dragons & Bawlz
3. Box Festival by Brainstorm

There were only two oldskool demo entries, the winner being a Colecovision demo, run on original hardware for the compo, by Krue (his first demo).

Wild
1. Wyndham Reality by The Peppers Gang – another Second Reality real-life/human “demo”, done entirely at the hotel by a once-anonymous crew that turned out to be the Blockparty organizers themselves. They forfeited their prizes, which went to 2nd through 4th place instead.
2. Criticalartware
3. All That Glitters Is Not Code by Tabernac – a stop-motion assortment of demo-like effects, again done entirely at the party place.

For the first time, there was a live compo stream. You can watch it again, with all the zany antics, at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/blockparty-2010.

Coda also won the music compo and placed 2nd in the oldskool music compo, which was won by Lapine. Guybrush held a workshop for using Processing code to create realtime visual effects for DJs. Criticalartware showed three entries from a “glitch compo” held in their hotel room.

As Jason Scott promised five of them, Blockparty 2011 will take place. However, it will not be in Cleveland, but rather in California, most likely the bay area. It will also be later in the year, around September. Nothing else is certain yet. Notacon will still take place around April in Cleveland, although it will not be in the Wyndham hotel, and another demo party might take Blockparty’s place alongside it.

Blockparty 2010 invitation released

Evoflash has released the invitation intro for Blockparty 2010, running in, you guessed it, Flash. It’s still a very cool demo, with superb music from Coda. Just click here to watch. Feel free to comment on the invite on Pouet as well. Seven weeks to party time!

Blockparty 2010 is taking place April 15th-18th in Cleveland, OH, back with Notacon. This is the fourth of the five promised annual editions, making it, oddly enough, the longest running demoparty in North America to date. There are a few competition changes, and be sure to check out Guybrush’s workshop, “Proce55ed Synaesthesia for fun and profit”. See you there!

Turkish Rambo DVD and soundtrack released

Rampage, aka Turkish Rambo, is now available on DVD! The folks at Dark Maze Studios have rescued the 1986 film from the vaults of Turkey and re-dubbed the voices, while Virt / Brainstorm has created a new musical score which sounds well over the original budget. He previewed it at the Blockparty 2009 wild compo. The DVD is on sale here:

Four days to Blockparty!

Well, three really, counting the free Notacon seminar preview on Thursday night. Registration is over but there are plenty of tickets left at the door for $100. A couple weeks ago, Devi Ever stepped in with some cool prizes for the oldskool demo and resurrected oldskool music compo. Now the regular demo competition boasts a unique prize – the compo machine itself! It sports a Core 2 Quad Q9400 and a GeForce GTX 280. So get cracking on those entries – or meet someone at the party and make something up on the spot! See you there…

MindCandy at Blockparty 2009

Hornet (specifically, Trixter and Phoenix) will return to Blockparty in 2009 and announce the next release in the MindCandy DVD/video series. Details will be given on release date, format, features, and playlist candidates. They will also present around half an hour of captures already completed. Hornet/MindCandy is sponsoring Blockparty 2009 with some t-shirts (very similar to a previous design worn by Phoenix at NV/RVScene and prize money. There will be some extra non-prize shirts available as well.

Trailer Park Demos releases Blockparty 2008 Invitation source code

Trailer Park Demos released the full source code for the Blockparty 2008 Invitation today on their website. The release contains all the improvements to the Trailer Park Demos technology over the past year, including the group’s internal demo editing tool. In other words, this is the source code for an unreleased final version rather than the party version from a year ago. This release is worth checking out, since demo groups do not often share their latest and greatest work with the public. The project compiles under Visual Studio 2005 and uses OpenGL for rendering.

If not, you are probably wondering where the invitation is. Well, the wait is over. You can now snag the finished demo on pouet.net, or sit back and enjoy the video capture on capped.tv.
